Employees’ State Insurance Scheme of India is a multidimensional social security system tailored to provide socio-economic protection to worker population and their dependants covered under the scheme. Besides full medical care for self and dependants, that is admissible from day one of insurable employment, the insured persons are also entitled to a variety of cash benefits in times of physical distress due to sickness, temporary or permanent disablement etc. resulting in loss of earning capacity, the confinement in respect of insured women, dependants of insured persons who die in industrial accidents or because of employment injury or occupational hazard are entitled to a monthly pension called the dependants benefit. The ESI Act was enacted by the Parliament in the year 1948 and was implemented first at Kanpur on 24th February, 1952.
For effective administration of the Scheme, a Sub Regional Office is functioning at Nagpur which has jurisdiction over 12 Branch Offices spread over different districts of Vidharbha. Nagpur has the distinction of being one of the oldest centers in India and the first in Maharashtra where the Act was implemented in September 1954. The Nagpur SRO presently caters to the Social Security needs of close to 6000 Employers and 1.42 lakh Insured Persons. The total beneficiaries count including the families of the IP’s is approximately 5.5 lakh.
Medical care to the beneficiaries is provided through a network of 16 ESIS Dispensaries and one Hospital managed and run by the Maharashtra State Govt. To further augment and provide Super Specialty medical facility to the IP’s and their families ESIC has Tie up arrangements with 16 Major Reputed Pvt Hospital of Nagpur on Cash less treatment basis.




ESIC is the only health insurance scheme that offers full medical care to workers and their dependants without any ceiling on individual expenditure.
